Battle of Fort Wagner Inspiration for Glory

On July 18, 1863, the first formal all African-American infantry unit in the Civil War, the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, was part of the attack on Fort Wagner on Morris Island, South Carolina. The unit spearheaded the all-out attack resulting in heavy casualties including that of the unit's colonel, Robert Gould Shaw.
